Definition of Condition

A condition is either,

  • A criterion, a comparison element in a rule, or
  • A state, a description of the way things are, either by enumeration of the entities involved and the values of one or more of their fundamental attributes or by simple characterisation of a region under observation.

The definitions are compatible if considered as follows: an entity is in a specified or recognised condition when the values of its attributes satisfy one or more defined criteria. For example, a car battery may be in the condition “flat” when the criterion (“comparison element in a rule”) “Battery Voltage < 11V" is true.
